Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

Founded by George Stephenson in 1847, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is the leading body for professional mechanical engineers. It is committed to ''technology transfer'' as well as ensuring the highest professional standards.

Members work in research, design, development, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, contracting, consulting and teaching, in fields as diverse as lubrication, satellite launching, surgical implants and in power stations.

IMechE publishes dozens of volumes of magazines, journals and technical papers. Anyone in the engineering field will find something useful for their career. A range of information booklets and video programmes are available from the Marketing department in London.

Corporate Members may Register as Chartered Engineers, the internationally recognised standard for engineers qualifying in the UK. Engineers with MIMechE or FIMechE after their name a're fully-qualified mechanical engineers.

In 2004, the Institution's Trustee Board agreed a new Statement of Intent:

1. The Institution will focus on defining its future stance and aspirations, and implementing appropriate changes. Whilst pursuing this imperative, the IMechE will continue to establish dialogue and collaborate with any other engineering institution which shares its view of the future.
2. The Institution will continue to espouse high, but appropriate, standards, linking corporate membership directly to EC(UK) requirements for registration as a professional engineer (CEng or IEng).
3. The Institution will seek to put in place a framework which will:
   • enhance the impact of, and income generated by, its events programme.
   • enhance staff support for Membership and Learned Society events in the region.
   • develop an appropriate and cost-effective international profile.
   • reduce membership application processing time.
